Viruseptin Cold Preventing Lozenges contain the active ingredient iota-carrageenan (Carragelose®), which is extracted from red algae. Iota-carrageenan helps the body’s own defenses to fight viruses in the upper respiratory tract. The active ingredient surrounds the virus particles and prevents them from attaching to the mouth and throat, which reduces the multiplication and spread of the virus. The fastest way for viruses to attack the body is through the mucous membrane lining the nose – at least for the viruses that cause colds and flu. If the mucous membrane is dry or irritated, which is caused by factors such as air pollution and dry air, it is easier for viruses to infect the mucous membrane cells. Once the virus has taken hold in the cells, it can quickly spread to the rest of the body. In the body it causes classic cold symptoms such as cough, sore throat, fatigue and runny nose.
